Crubasdale Lodge, Muasdale, Argyll
Lace courses have been organised by Linda Bryce and held at Crubasdale Lodge since 1999.
![]()
The courses are held in a former Victorian Hunting Lodge in a lovely location on the Scottish west coast of Kintyre, set in 5 acres of "wild" gardens with a lovely sandy beach, which visitors are welcome to make use of. Just 30 metres away is the sea shore, with wonderful views of the islands of Islay, Jura, Gigha and Cara.
Muasdale is situated in Argyll, on the A83, 23 miles south of Tarbert, and 15 miles north of Campbeltown. This is an ideal spot to also take advantage of the unique attractions that the Kintyre peninsula offers.

The village of Muasdale is only 5 miles from the ferry to Gigha, a few miles further north at Kennacraig is the ferry terminal for Islay, Jura, or Colonsay and just a few miles to the east of Kennacraig, at Claonaig, is the ferry to Arran. Walking, fishing, golf and birdwatching can all be enjoyed in the vicinity. There are lovely sandy beaches only a short walk away from the chalet and the village shop is only 300 metres away.
For the watersport enthusiast there is excellent surfing and windsurfing at Machrihanish. There are some great scuba diving sites all around the peninsula and the islands. There are also some wonderful white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters for those wishing a more relaxing time exploring rock pools or just laying on the beach.
Golf can be found at Tarbert, Machrihanish and Southend where it is possible to play on some of the best links in the country, but be warned it is normally very busy during the summer.
The archaeology of the area is very interesting, with a Heritage Centre in Campbeltown and the famous Kilmartin Centre just over one hours drive away towards Oban.
If you are lucky you might spot golden eagles, otters and dolphins. Buzzards are almost as common as sparrows here! If all else fails, there are always the Crubasdale cats and chickens!
Pony trekking is available at several locations in Kintyre.
For those interested in gardens the Kintyre peninsula offers a mild climate and consequently there are some well known gardens within a reasonable distance. Crubasdale Lodge is currently reclaiming their garden from the wild (or - fighting the bracken!) a potentially varied garden complex, so you may be interested in seeing a garden in the making. There will also be plants for sale, depending on the season.
There are many craft workshops in the area to suit most tastes and Crubasdale Crafts offers craft tuition to suit the individual or groups. You could try your hand at bobbin lace, wool spinning, paper or felt making, something different to do if the weather is inclement.
There are some good places to eat out, along the whole length of the peninsula, from the very reasonable to excellent quality. The nearest restaurant is at The Argyll Hotel, Bellochantuy, just 5 miles to the south, the hotel also has a wide choice of food on offer, served in their conservatory overlooking a wide sandy beach and the sea. During the summer they serve lunches, teas and evening meals with spectacular views and sunsets over the islands. About half a mile further on is The Hunting Lodge at Putechan also with good food, a wide selection of malt whisky and sea views.
